Turkey Bowl 2014

Woke up late and hungover and rushed to pick up our two late-addition ladies from Oakland before heading up to Bridgeport, CT for a chilly day of frisbee fun. Got there right at the tail end of our team being slaughtered by a bunch of PoNY players, threw my cleats on and played a point that immediately gave me the worst pounding headache of my life. Mercifully the game ended within a few points (to the tune of 2-13) and so I had some time to chew a bagel with peanut butter, drink some bland black coffee, and try to ignore the unpleasantness in my skull.

After a bit the second game started. We were up against a bunch of small-college kids, half of whom had clearly not been playing for more than a couple months. We're talking, needed a timeout to explain zone offense. It was not close, though they did make a bit of a run in the second half.

We spent a long time curled up in blankets and cuddling for warmth before the third game. The third game was close, but we were able to close it out and take second in our pool of the Vulture division (competitive, as opposed to last year where we won the Turkey division, noncompetitive).

That got us to the 3rd place game, where we promptly went down 3-7 after a number of bad turnovers and worse defense. We cleaned it up for a big run and wound up taking the game 13-11ish for a fun finish, then helped ourselves to big plates of turkey and stuffing for the feast. All in all a very fun day, especially after my hangover headache cleared up--somewhere during the third game, right around the time I cracked a Bud Lite and drained half the can in delight, and amazement, at how such a usually disappointing beer could be, in that moment, the perfect pick-me-up.
