Again, form wasn't perfect for every rep on the DL. At the higher weights, my first one or two reps would be solid and the third kind of shit. As in, I'd get the bar up but couldn't keep my back completely flat. Bench press was without a spot, so it kind of sucked to miss my last attempt. I was able to fight the bar up for all the previous reps, though. And I think I picked the right weights for the metcon, both exercises got tough by the end.

Eintracht Training
The worst practice yet. I got there half an hour late and they were still warming up. Then for the next thirty to forty minutes we went over the coach-guy's new "strategy", an L-stack with so many tactical problems that I couldn't believe he actually thought it would work. Especially with the average throwing ability here in Frankfurt, it was just miserable. We split into two groups and drilled it, and I think two passes were completed in a row maybe twice. When I walked to the side to practice my lefty backhands with one of the more advanced players, coach-guy stopped the whole practice and brought everybody in, then explained that everybody on the sideline had to watch the players doing the drill. That it was a tactic-based practice, so we had to pay attention. But he also explained that he wasn't going to go into detail about how to play the L-stack in different situations--we were supposed to pretend we would only be forced one direction, that the disc would always start on the sideline, and that nobody would ever poach. We were forbidden to poach. It was a giant waste of time, and I'm starting to really get frustrated. It's hard to even exploit the practice for my own purposes, which I usually try to do by matching up against some of the more experienced players, or testing my patience as a thrower when not one single person is cutting for me. But this practice made me really reconsider whether it's worth spending three hours on Monday night diddling around with such little opportunity to play real ultimate. Next week maybe I'll just go for a run.

Night Run
Had to shift my schedule around and couldn't make it to the gym, so instead I went for a nice long jog. Less than halfway through my shins were really hurting, but I decided to ignore it and keep going. I actually wound up feeling better after a while. My first two miles were around 8:15 and 8:05 respectively, and the second half was a little faster than the first.

Feldrenner Training
Still outdoors on the turf. Tonight we did an in-cut defense drill, deep cut/defend drill, and a modified scrimmage: 4 defensive players pull to 5 offensive players. Offensive player A swings to B, who then must complete a pass that gets caught further downfield than 20yds from the endzone line--any pass caught less than 20yds from the endzone line (the "dead zone") is a turnover. Once one of the downfield players catches it past this "dead zone" they continue to play 3v3 until they score (A and B don't do anything except the first two passes, and the puller only guards B until B throws the first pass downfield, then he sits out too). It was kind of weird, and I didn't figure out all the rules right away, but it was kind of interesting as a strategic challenge.

Deutsche Nationalmannschaft Tryout
"Inside Rocket" is the name of the team, I believe. Their logo is awfully reminiscent of Johnny Bravo. In any case I hitched a ride with one of the Mainz captains and we got to Heidelberg comfortably before the 9am start time. After gathering and quatching for a bit the 40-odd of us went over to the track for a fitness test. Unaware that we'd be running anywhere other than the field, I didn't have my running shoes...but no biggie. It was a heart-rate/VO2-max test of some kind, involving a heart rate monitor and a jog around the track following a pace-bicyclist. The jog got harder and harder though, speeding up every 400m, until eventually I tapped out at 3600m with a heart rate of 198. It wound up being approximately 2.325mi in 18:30, or 7:47 average pace, which sounds easy (considering I've done 3.1mi at like 6:27 pace) but I haven't been running and it showed. Compare to my last VO2 max test.
Anyway after that we split into 4 teams and did a breakmark drill, then played a mini-tournament with games to 7. After breaking for lunch we had another game to 7 and then a combined scrimmage, which my team won (putting me at 3-2 for the day in scrimmages). I played fairly well, but I wasn't used to playing that much at that high a level--not every player is strong, but enough are that it was no picnic trying to play defense. I also had to play downfield a lot and was having trouble working myself into the offense at times, problems with timing and not pushing deep enough in my cuts. The biggest problem though was that each team had only three or four subs, so there wasn't a ton of rest. Lots of fun, though. Looking forward to tomorrow.
After the last scrimmage we listened to a little training advice, showered and then gorged ourselves on Greek food at a nearby restaurant. Nice.

Some weird drills, and the mixed scrimmage at the end was kind of disappointing, but the 3v4 scrimmage was good. I put some nice leading long throws out. I'll have to focus on keeping my vision open on offense this weekend, though--I'm going to tryouts for the German National team and don't want to make stupid turnovers because I didn't see the poach. Also, tighter defense. As always.

Eintracht Training
I'm not really feeling the leadership. I agree that it's important to learn to throw with touch...but I'm not really interested in perfecting my air-bounce backhand. That was what we did for the first twenty minutes of practice. The next twenty minutes? Blades. Okay, so it's indoor. But still.
But there was thirty or so minutes of scrimmage at the end and the drills weren't all bad...just not really my cup of tea, strategically speaking. Plus with the beginners I get good practice having to attack discs on the edge of my sphere of catchability. I also met Jared, a player from Denver who picks up for a week with whatever team is in whatever city Cirque du Soleil happens to visit (he's one of their lighting techs). Nice guy, interesting job, pretty cool way to see the world.

Feldrenner Training
The structured throwing practice and the warmup drill we did really made me think about how much further along the team here in Mainz is fundamentally from Frankfurt. I don't know whether they understand the game better, or whether this team's leaders just put more thought into planning practices, but I'm a big believer in doing drills that mimic real-game situations. Even though there were plenty of errors in both cities (both teams have beginners even at their "experienced" practices) I felt a lot more incentive to push myself and improve tonight, compared to Monday, because the drill actually made sense to me. After that we played 3v3 continuous-passes, which is super tiring because I'm not used to non-stop Atlas-style play like that, and after a while my defense started really suffering...but then we moved into a full-field 7v7 mixed scrimmage, 3/4 the way it ought to be, and that was pretty great. I still can't get over how nice it is to play on a turf field, 7-9pm under the lights. I mostly handled, half the time wondering why they don't dump/swing enough and the other half of the time throwing goals to girls. Boom.

Frustrating at times, but still definitely good practice for me--I got to work on my throws, run around indoors and remember how bad it is for your knees. Feldrenner Training
Long commute, but the practice was worth it. Outdoors, turf field, under the lights from 7-9pm, I felt like I was back home practicing with Machine. Numbers were low, but the level was pretty high. After a couple drills we scrimmaged 3v3 with an additional permanent defender, which made things pretty interesting. Thank god I didn't have to be the permanent defender. As it was I started to feel some tightness in my groin, but pretended it wasn't there and finished out practice fine. We had a solid ten minutes or so to work on throwing afterwards, and it was good to remember what I had been missing. After practice there was a team meeting to discuss goals and how to reach them. I'm looking forward to putting in some work myself.

Exploring

I basically set out for a jog to explore the area around Griesheim, where I just moved into my apartment. When something caught my eye, I paused for maybe half a minute to check it out. I found the river, saw the turf field, discovered a shisha bar that has two pool tables, and also stumbled on a couple mini-parks, one of which has a basketball hoop. Pretty neat little area, and it's definitely nice to run along the river.

I got to sleep in a bit on Sunday, have a nice leisurely breakfast and make it to the fields without any rush. We only had one game, but I got to play a lot--I played well on Saturday, and none of the three captains were playing (two were injured, the third was running the tournament) so the other guys were encouraging me to stay on the field. I played well, both sides of the disc, and we won to take 5th place. I also got to watch Anna play some in the women's finals, and catch up with Heiko because he came from Würzburg to watch.

Whether I woke up to the buzzing of my watch or the buzzing in my head, I can't rightly say. What I do know is that breakfast consisted of Fanta, Schnitzel, and a recap of everybody's questionable decisions from my friend's bachelor party the night before. Pretty soon, though, I had to brush my teeth and hike back to the Hauptbahnhof for my train back to Frankfurt. I barely slept on the train, and when we rolled into Frankfurt three hours later I didn't feel much better. After rushing back to my temporary home to grab my cleats, I took the S-bahn back the other direction to Nied and walked to the fields. The Mainz guys were already playing their first game of the day, so I warmed up quick to be ready. I didn't play at all, though, instead watching from the sidelines as they lost the game (but somehow, won the pool by point differential in a 3-way tie). After a long bye (in Europe, formats are staggered and teams almost never have two games back to back) we played the semi-finals play-in game. This time I was able to get in the game, and I did well so they kept asking me to keep playing. I scored a couple goals, threw one or two and felt fast (everybody else had played all of Friday already!). It was fun, even though we lost. The other Feldrenner guys were pretty disappointed, but for obvious reasons I was insulated from all of that. The cool thing was that I got to see Anna, who was there playing with a women's team from Franconia (Frankas). We had a nice chat at the end of the day before I hitched a ride back to Hofheim with the Feldrenner captain.

Pure Training
is the name of the fitness studio where I went today to do a free trial workout. It's basically the next step up from McFit--a little cleaner, a little less crowded, a little more expensive. Their free weights are strangely dense, and therefore have very small diameters, so I'm not sure how well they will work for serious deadlifting or olympic stuff...and they also don't have matted flooring, so things are pretty limited in that department anyway. But the cool thing is that they have a gymnastics rings station, a set of parallel bars stamped "CCCP" and enough ceiling that you can do muscle-ups there as well. The bar is pretty slick so grip becomes a problem, but hey. It's better than McFit...and I heard Ellie Goulding's "Lights". That was cool. So, this was my workout:

Flood Run
Tried to run to my girl's place as the light faded after Hurricane Irene passed the night before, but the crazy flooding from the Passaic River made it pretty tough. Including the cumulative 1 mile where I had to wade through waist-deep water (taking pictures all the while, of course) I did the 5mi in 51:40. The last 2.5mi were all dry, though, and I finished the final 1.2 in 8:47 (7:19 pace).

A-League Semifinals
vs Roots. Kept it close for a few despite multiple turns, but couldn't keep up the defense that got us the disc back each time. I don't know if it was that fact that we only had 2 subs, but we never played like a finals-worthy team for more than a possession at a time. Some nice flow here, a good D there, but Roots was scoring way too easily and we kept giving them the disc on bonehead turnovers. Pretty frustrating. I made up ground for a deep D in the endzone on an S-cut, scored on a huck that came over my head from the same lane (but dropped another of the same kind), and played alright overall, but the team never really found its groove together. Open cuts looked off, bad throws to good cuts, good throws to bad cuts, we started to come back at the end but it was way too late. From 4-8 at half, we ended up losing 10-15 or so.
But it was a fun season. I good a nice preview of some up and coming Machiners, and plenty of beer was enjoyed courtesy of Dusty so there are obviously no regrets. Hopefully next year we can get a few more players to commit, the Illuminati split into Illuminati/New World Order left us nearly savage for most games. We'll see.

Long Day
After a solid few days of rest, headed back to BID for a night with friends and then went with them down to the Mercer fields for a scrimmage against the DEVYL open YCC team. With only two subs, the first two games to 7 were a little rough for me and the other "club" players (mostly Machiners), but we handled business and squeaked out wins against the top U-19 players in the area. For the third game to 7, we combined with the U-16 team and played 4/3 lines, giving everybody some good experience (but the U-19ers won that scrim).
After a WaWa lunch break and some re-warmup, Blueprint held practice with 14 players plus me. I helped run a handler drill and then we played a series of games to 3, which were also pretty tough. Hot, humid, one sub for both teams, it ended up being a long day for the few of us that were there for both the DEVYL scrim and BP practice. We finished up with a couple sprints and then Albert, James and I went back to Frenchy's house. We hopped in his pool for a much-needed cooldown before nomming on delicious home-grilled burgers and side dishes courtesy of the French family. Overall a very tiring, but also fulfilling day.

vs Feeney/James in white, both teams missing some players. We were without a single girl, so our 7 dudes gave us one sub for a game of 6 on 7. Undaunted, we went up 5-1 before slipping and losing half 8-9, but kept it tight to 12-12 and then went on a defensive run in the second half to pull ahead and win the game 17-14ish. Apparently the drizzle kept some people home, setting up a Blue win over Black without their star deep Jake the Jake, so we face Blue in the finals on Tuesday.

Ugh. Pretty much every "pushup" after round 3 was a salmon flop because I couldn't keep a rigid core. Cleans felt good, but my squat is still weak and the hardest part of the movement was getting up from the bottom of the front squat. I started to do another set at 135 but had to dump the bar, and decided to try a few power cleans before moving on to the couplet. Also, after that we finished with 3x20 GHD situps.

I've gone pretty hard this week, so I think a little rest and another workout in the sand will get me in a good place for Wildwood.

The Delaware River
Spent four hours or so floating 5mi down the Delaware River in an inner tube on Saturday, then went back up today for 10mi of rafting. No rapids to speak of, but a lot of good swimming and lounging in the sun, punctuated with rowing and horsing around.

*I used a light assistance band for the last set of ring dips, which might have actually been my 5th round...I lost count because I had to take so many breaks to finish the dips each round.
Warmed up at Mercer with some Atlas, then won 16-14 vs New World Order (NWO). The game was basically on-serve until the very end. They broke and we broke back in the first half, same thing in the second, tied at 14 and we scored on O and then finished the door with a break. I scooped up three poach D's and would have had another if I had layed out, threw a few goals and scored the game-winner on a deep look. Still not quite in rhythm, and it didn't help that the field was dusty and tractionless in certain areas. I want to get in some more game-speed work before Wildwood, so I'm thinking about doing a suicide workout in the sand sometime soon.

vs Big Stick
We had 9 or 10 guys this time, but it was still pretty rough. Kept it close in the beginning, but they ran away with the game and we couldn't get enough defense together to stem the bleeding. Turnovers close to the goal line gave them quick scores and Big Stick isn't the kind of team to give many back. It was good to run around and I felt like I played pretty good position D, except that I got tired playing every point and was trailing too much on in-cuts. Other than that, one huck I couldn't catch up to, and one that I couldn't put far enough to Jake the Jake leading his defender, I did alright. After the game, Stoddard got us to do the following:

It was hot as hell and I sweat profusely. Haven't been working out in the heat, because most of my lifting is done in the park after dark when it's cool. My heel felt okay during the run, I wore the gel cups and they seem to do their job but the heel still feels bruised. It hurts whenever I put pressure on my bare foot. Depending on how my CF908 workout goes tomorrow, I might play summer league this week. We'll see.

Practice, Scrimmage
Practice was relaxed for the most part, we focused on drilling zone defense in some very windy conditions at Buccleuch Park. The conditioning at the end was a workout in its own right, though:

Hellfish Bonanza
Woke up bright and early Saturday morning and wished that the weather was better. Whooped on JMU B, lost on dgp to William and Mary, sucked against a very tall Va Tech team, slept during the bye while listening to new find Pretty Lights, then faced--wait for it--NYU. A surprisingly encouraging loss on dgp, lots to work on but the potential is there. Oh, and it was a barn burner as usual.
Speaking of which, my minivan nabbed gyros and burgers and beer at Dave's Taverna, then got ready for the barn party that JMU throws every year. I had heard good things about this tournament party and it didn't disappoint. Pregame was a shot of everclear chased with everclear/Monster, then beer and lots of BID House Blue at the barn, shots of Cream sprinkled throughout. Solid party music in the beginning, a solid live band and lots of dancing. I crowd-surfed for the first time, danced with the Rutgers and TCNJ women's teams, slapped Frenchy in the face repeatedly and in general had a good night of drunken carousing. Yakked in the bushes next to the hotel front entrance, eventually found my way to a bed and woke up still drunk.
Warmed up late and fought off the drunk, never ran into the hangover (somehow). Walked over Richmond, went toe to toe with Maryland for the first half but somehow found a lot of ways to make it to the endzone and not score. Sucked in the second half. Jake the Jake and the Jive Turkeys bagged our final consolation game so we hit the road and got home pretty early.
I worked on my defense, bid a few times and got 6 or 7 D's throughout the weekend (including 2 or 3 that were thrown right to me). A few bonehead turnovers and a drop but my break throws were on point and I didn't force too many hucks. Not sure how Easterns Qualifier will go next weekend, but I'm happy that my knee held up over the weekend so I should be able to get back in the groove of workouts and practices.

I busted my hip after falling off my bike when I hit black ice on the way to work on Monday, so today I got 20 minutes of electric stim around the bruised/swollen area and then did some stretching. Because I knew I wouldn't be able to do all the pushups and abs that I normally would during the team workout, I went to the gym ahead of time and did the following:

Frustrated
I saw the sports medicine doctor today to have him check my knee. Overstretched muscles around the knee and shin, plus a tweaked patellar tendon, two weeks of rest and I should be good to go.

First Team Workout
Spring 2011 began.
I wasn't able to participate in the actual workout, but while the team was going through their circuits I did the following:

0:30 sprinter crunches
0:30 bent-knee hold
0:30 dive-bomber pushups

0:30 leg raises
0:30 pushups
0:30 left plank
0:30 right plank
0:30 pushups
After that I stopped keeping track of what exercises I did, but they were all either some form of pushups/dips or some kind of ab exercise. Three rounds of ten "stations".

I underdressed. It was cold, especially after a week in Florida. My lungs burned and my ears ached. I want to get back into shape, but this shit sucks. The silver lining is that this morning my leg didn't hurt for the first time since the overnight tournament.

I had to wait longer than I wanted to for most of those rounds, waiting on B-Mor to finish his cleans. I felt like the DB bench press was much too light, the power cleans too, but the deadlifts gave me a lot of trouble because I still feel really weak when using proper form. Overall a solid workout.
